The Mr. Mo Project was all started because of one dog, Moses. Moses was a senior pit bull surrendered to the shelter by the only family he knew, for one reason, he was too old. His family then tried to adopt a puppy from that same shelter the very same day. Moses had an extended stay at the shelter until his picture was sent to us, we knew we had to save him!
A volunteer of ours drove all the way to Florida, picked him up and brought him back, and he joined our family. One and half years later, Moses started to lose the use of his back legs. Grasping at straws the only thing we could do to diagnose him was an MRI, and as newlyweds, we did not have the money to do that. Knowing that's all we could do, we sold our hot tub for the exact amount needed to pay for the MRI and had it done. We then received the devastating news that he had a spinal cord tumor growing into his spinal column, he was given four weeks to live. We did everything we could, but five weeks later he was gone.
The pain of the loss was overwhelming; we knew we needed to do something to honor his life and try to help more seniors live the best life for the rest of their life. Over the time that we had him, we saw just how expensive a senior dog can be, the vet visits, the medications, and the emergencies. It made us realize that many older dogs might be in the shelter purely based off of the cost of care.
The Mr. Mo Project covers all of the medical costs for the life of the dogs, once they are in the project. This opens up so many homes that might have the love to give but not the additional income. We currently have over 100 dogs in foster homes and spend an average of $35,000 a month on veterinary care.
With your help, we can continue giving these senior dogs all the care they need to live out a happy, healthy end of life.
